There is a very good view, even without the former tower. Perhaps the vegetation has encroached, or maybe there was an effort to remove them. I recall some remnants of the tower anchors at one time, but it has been a few years since my last visit there. The "High Point" tower site, which is on a trail, is near a local 2240' high point and about one half mile from the 2289' points. It can be quite beautiful at peak color, but as it is quite exposed and generally very windy the peak color does not last long. The barrens are covered with blueberry and huckleberry bushes which resemble a vast red carpet in mid October. Thankfully there are some barrens where it is possible to navigate around on the rock and gravel surfaces to avoid trampling the vegetation. The vegetation is quite thick in some areas and at times impenetrable. However, I have obtained permission to photograph off trail in that general vicinity, so it should be possible. They officially prohibit off trail hiking in that area of the Preserve to protect the wildlife and vegetation. You would also need to obtain permission from the Sam's Point Preserve office. That explains the lack of trails and why few hikers would deem the flat 2289' high points worthy of a visit. I suspect one would need to climb (or more correctly visit) both to complete the various prominence lists on which the Shawangunk Ridge is included. That is a good question for which I have never heard an answer. Jason Foose, Changing Hands, Tempe, AZ Winter 2020 Reading Group Indie Next List In the Dream House is a unique and extraordinary book.” I didn’t feel like I was reading a book so much as observing a person’s innermost thoughts. Her words move with a strange kind of urgency, surreal and yet true, like late-night phone calls when the rest of the world is asleep. Machado has a gift for exposing the raw nerves and small miracles lurking beneath the surface of our daily lives. Inside, Carmen Maria Machado bares her soul in all of its pain and beauty, offering an intimate and profoundly vulnerable look at her own life, love, and sexuality. “Welcome to the Dream House in this daring new kind of memoir that defies boundaries and boldly discards the conventions of genre. Now that wouldn’t be me! I would love to have a home in Ireland and spend half the year there. Now she is back in Ireland to see the home she inherited, trying to avoid her nosy cousins, anxious to return home. After college she moved to New York and started her own life, marrying, divorcing and ending up with a son named Zach. Whenever she asked questions about her father Patricia would always say he was a kind man and he died shortly after they were married. Her mother has died and Elizabeth must clear out the house and make a decision regarding selling.Įlizabeth was never extremely close to her mother Patricia, often wishing she had a father figure in her life. We start off in present with Elizabeth Keane returning to her childhood home in Ireland. The book is divided by chapters titled Now and Then. The big draw for me was the Irish setting, an old house and a mystery about a past life. I am of course talking about the 1983 John Carpenter adaptation of the Stephen King novel Christine. There are a lot of movies that feature cars, and some classics where the cars are the stars, from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Herbie The Love Bug to the Back to the Future and the Fast and the Furious series.īut there is one movie where the car outperforms most of the human actors and looks quite fabulous doing it. Additionally, fact that Alberta was tangled up with Al Capone in life just adds another intriguing layer to this character’s story. They’ll even go down into Woodstone’s cholera pit to find the answers they need. What makes this episode’s whodunnit really come together is how committed everyone is to discovering the truth. Someone with this kind of star power is bound to continue making an impact long after their death. Alberta’s fandom really has extended to the deepest darkest corners of the internet (looking at you, Creepy Todd), but she deserves nothing less. Sam’s ( Rose McIver) podcast has re-ignited the mystery. Clearly, the mystery behind her murder has captivated generations of adoring fans. It doesn’t need to be said that Alberta is the group that holds this chaotic ghostly family together. Photo: Bertrand Calmeau/CBS ©2023 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. NOAA is charged with responding to oil spills, hazardous material releases, and marine debris, primarily through the Ocean Service’s Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R). What was spilled? Where is the spill likely to travel in the water? How is the local environment affected now - and how might it be affected down the road? What's the best way to clean up the spill? How will balance be restored to the environment after the damage has been done? NOAA brings scientific expertise to the table to help answer these questions.ĭamage Assessment, Remediation, and Restoration Program When dealing with oil and chemical spills, there are many questions that need to be answered. And these environmental and economic damages can linger for decades. Spills can also wreak havoc on the economies of coastal communities by forcing the closure of fisheries, driving away tourists, or temporarily shutting down navigation routes. The release of oil and chemicals into our coastal waterways can kill wildlife, destroy habitat, and contaminate critical resources in the food chain. These spills range from small ship collisions to fuel transfer mishaps to massive spill events like the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. NOAA brings scientific expertise to the tableĮach year, there are thousands of oil and chemical spills in coastal waters around the nation. Junior music executive Nora ( Lilly Singh), the show's lead human character, dreams of becoming a big player in her industry, but the small record label she works for, a relic of the '70s, is about to close up shop. The setup for The Muppets Mayhem is a fairly simple one. Completely recapturing the magic from the Jim Henson era seems like a fool's errand at this point, but the Electric Mayhem still unequivocally rock on. By the 10th and final episode, those early concerns have mostly faded, and you find yourself happy that Disney is able to find a way to put good, new Muppets stories out in the world. The show's incredibly catchy theme song starts to become permanently lodged in your brain. It devotes an entire episode to spoofing The Beatles: Get Back, Peter Jackson's beloved 2021 documentary. The show starts off a little iffy - an immediate concern for any demographic old enough to consider Animal, Zoot, and the rest of the gang absolute icons - but it continuously picks up steam as it goes along. |
